“ Survival films are like sports films . ” I had never made the correlational statistics until address withEiza González , the star of the new sci - fi horrorAsh . When you think about it , survival and sports films have much in common . The main character typically faces adversity and campaign their body to the limit . That could be something as dangerous as outlast on a desert island . It could also entail face off against a bigger and strong opposition on the football field . Either path , survivors and jock must find it within themselves to dig rich and pull through .

In Flying Lotus’Ash , González play Riya , an astronaut who wakes up and discovers her entire crew has been slaughtered . Riya does n’t commend her name until another crew member name Brion ( Aaron Paul ) arrives at the place . Why does Riya have no recall of what take place ? Does Brion sleep together , or is he choosing to deduct selective information ? Either way , these two must get off the planet before this mysterious someone — or something — come back for more mass murder .

In an interview with Digital Trends , González and Paul discuss the animalism required for their roles and how music played a ingredient in shape scenes onAsh .

This interview has been edit out for length and clarity .

Digital Trends : I want to start out with this line that Flying Lotus saidGuillermo del Torotold him . “ Do n’t engineer the movies that you require to make ; direct the moves that need you to make them . ” And I recall that was just so powerful , not even just for directing . you could apply it to a lot of things . I want to do that with your vocation . Can you nail a clip when you saw a part and take it because you believe that the project needed you to do it ?

Eiza González : I wish I had that self-assurance .

Aaron Paul:[Laughs ]

González : I do n’t have that confidence at all . I ’m like , “ Please . Please . Please pick me .

Paul : Yeah , I find that . At the get-go of my career , you ’re just struggle to get a job . Right ?

González : Totally .

Paul : Now , Eiza and I are rosy enough to be work and to be able to yield our card . Jobs are make out in . It ’s still a grind , but we have choices now at least . I have in mind , my main focus is that I have two baby and my married woman . So I incline to say no and just kind of knack with my crime syndicate . [ Laughs ] You know what I mean ? The kiddos are so little , and it ’s hard for me to pull myself forth .

González : He ’s the most consecrate father you ’ll fulfill . He really is . I do n’t say this thinly because I know a lot of adept fathers , but he really is like , I would say , number one .

Paul : Oh , I love you .

González : He prioritize his family . He ’s not run short to say it , so I ’m go to say it . I think this movie needed Aaron . I really do . I do n’t think I would ’ve been able-bodied to personally accomplish half of the things that I achieved in the movie without Aaron . It ’s a combination of his talent , but it ’s also a combination of his personality , his kindness , and his soul . We talk about talent , but we do n’t let the cat out of the bag about how crucial the quality of a human being descend into bid when you ’re on these sets .

Being a good somebody , attentive and caring of others , self - mindful . All these things make a ginormous deviation , peculiarly for adult female as well . I recall that we need to feel really good on a lot of these band , and having a male spouse like him who is just a dream — I ca n’t find a good word than dream — makes a difference of opinion . It really allow for me to be a serious actress and to be able to access lieu that if I did n’t feel safe , I would n’t have been . So I think this motion picture needed an Aaron 100 % without a doubt . And that ’s why this movie finish up being his .

Paul : Oh , please . I have sex you so much .

González : I really do . I really genuinely trust that . screw you .

Digital Trends : Well , I will put you in my top three fathers , Aaron . I ’m going to desire you .

Paul:[Laughs ]

González : Yeah , he deserves it .

Paul : Oh , thank you .

Digital Trends : Eiza , this is a very physical performance , and I ’m not just saying that in conflict vista . You have to convey so much emotion . You ’re literally wearing your mettle on your sleeve , specially in that last scene when you ’re flying off the satellite with rip in your eye . It ’s this relieved moment of “ I outlive , and I made it . ” I was wonder how a role like that , where you know animalism is such an significant aspect , informs your decision - making as an actor , and does it get you skinny to the character ?

González : That ’s what I attend for in character reference . That ’s what I crave deeply . I reckon that being able to die the predisposed or preempt thoughts or ideas of what I ’m up to of doing is really of import . And not for other people , but for myself . I ’ve been craving a role that mixed all the things that I was ache to go into . I imagine what really helps in projects like this is actually filming chronologically . It was n’t necessarily forever chronological , but we were n’t skipping to the end of the movie . There was a certain guild .

You ’re fagged — I ’m not gon na lie — when you ’re in a movie that you are in every shot of every minute of the film . I ’m in it for every second of the movie . You work thousands of hour a twenty-four hour period . You go to bed . You wake up . You do it . You go to bed . I never run across sunlight . There was an exhaustion that I take off carrying with me . A very interesting here and now in my life-time was when Riya just became the vessel . Everything happening in the remainder — this anger , this rage , this blast in her , and this excitement in her — the line is so tight .

I actually mean about this movie , funny enough , like a sports moving picture . Survival films aresports films . They ’re just people yearn to get to the other side . That creates a plenty of the beat spirit throughout the film . I stress to keep that in my mindset as I was going because you have to have survival . Endurance is part of the unconscious process of a film like this , and you have to maintain it because if not , the movie fall down plane . You really have to push through physically and mentally .

Digital Trends : I never even consider about it as a sports celluloid . It ’s such a upright analogy for it .

González : Yeah , it ’s a sport .

Paul : It ’s a lot .

Digital Trends : WithFlying Lotus ’ background , you said he would play medicine to set the tone of voice of a panorama . I require to go pre - this movie and post - this motion-picture show . As an actor , did you like to listen to certain music when develop a character to help you make choices ? Then , post - this movie , how will you now use music ?

Paul : Sometimes , I used to have headphones in and take heed to certain type of medicine just to get me in a headspace . That used to be part of my process . I had n’t done it in years , but then he [ take flight Lotus ] start to do it . First of all , when you walk onto the set , the lighting is always like that in the hues . It ’s such a visual spectacle , and it really invest you there in that mood . Then , he [ fly Lotus ] would just dally this thoroughgoing euphony in between setups that just put you there . It was the heartbeat of that particular part of the script .

González : Yeah . Some of the music is some of my favored role of the film .

Paul : His whole vibration is just so unbelievable . I love the cat . He put his heart and soul and person into this thing . He ’s been working on it since 2020 . I ’m proud to be a part of it .

Ash is in theatre on March 21 , 2025 .
