It ’s a tale as old as time : a beauty born of purple blood encounters a very fearsome beast in a faraway land . But whileDamsel‘s damsel , Millie Bobbie Brown ’s Princess Elodie , is in distress at times , she ’s not waiting around for anyone to save up her from the beast , in this causa a fire - pass off flying lizard , that threatens her . She can do quite well on her own , thank you very much , and as the Netflix fantasy photographic film ultimately read , Elodie is the hero in her own story with no need for a handsome doxy to rescue her .

It ’s this subversive flourish , plus plenty of brand fights , some mysterious caverns , and one retick - off heroine , that makes Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’sDamselso delicious to find out . Digital Trends recently chatted with the Spanish director and found out what drew him toDamsel , why he made the leap from revulsion to fantasy , his working relationship with Brown , and whether or not there will be aDamsel 2 in the futurity .

Elodie is lost in a cave in Damsel.

Netflix

Digital Trends : Juan , your background is primarily in repugnance with such films as28 Weeks LaterandIntruders . What attracted you to the fantasy genre , andDamselin special ?

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo : I was attracted toDamselbecause it grow the whole concept of the “ nance fib ” upside down . When I read Dan Mazeau ’s script , I could tell he want to shake the audience ’s perception of all the tropes the phantasy music genre typically has : the damoiselle in distress , of course , but also the dashing prince , the enchanted kingdom , the fire - pass off dragon , and so forth .

For a tenacious prison term now , I have been sharp to take on a classic story that had a modern turn , and Dan ’s screenplay had that . It ’s a beautiful adventure , but it ’s also a natural selection story . And that does n’t just enforce to Elodie , Millie ’s grapheme , but also to the dragon , which , in the phantasy genre , is normally just a monster that needs to be killed . Not to give too much away , but as the movie progresses , the dragon becomes a three - dimensional character as well , one with a deep and heavy backstory that transforms the pic into something more than just a traditional faery narration .

Also , I love drama and I love striking character like Elodie , and I recall they elevate the fantasy facial expression of the movie . The goal was always to make a beautiful , vivid , and baleful blue fantasy , but with an emphasis on the human aspects of these fantastical characters . I really love it when you’re able to relate to the characters , particularly the lead ones like Elodie , and even the dragon , in these kinds of stories .

One of the pitfalls of the fancy musical style is that the special effects and legal action sequences can drown the taradiddle and the characters . For everyLord of the Rings : The Two Towers , there ’s a hundredWarcrafts . How did you quash those likely downside ? Did you work with Millie to always keep the stress on Elodie and her storey ?

I guess everything startle from the playscript . When I ’m preparing to begin a picture , one of the things I do first is to get over the emotional journey of the principal fictitious character in every aspect he or she is in . WithDamsel , I put to work with Millie to always be aware of Elodie ’s emotional phylogeny . As a filmmaker , that then directs me to think about the film ’s visuals and how those character motivations can shape the expression of the cinema .

I think it ’s authoritative to first plant the heart of the scene and then demand several key query . What is the fictional character feeling ? What are the characters blend to achieve in the scene ? What is the conflict ? And then from there , you wager with the camera and the visual effects to serve you answer those questions . But always , the important matter is the character , even in action scenery .

InDamsel , I resolve to put the photographic camera close to Millie to emphasize her character ’s privileged conflict and emotion . That was a challenge for her because , unremarkably , you chicane when there ’s a lot of action and result involved . It ’s ordinarily a stunt person doing those heavy action scenes , but that was n’t true with Millie ; she was felicitous to do her own stunts ! I was so well-chosen that she was willing to do that because it allow me to focalise more on Elodie and her theatrical role arc instead of make her just another moving human body in a large , crowded fantasy canvas .

Some of your premature films , like the28 Days Laterzombie moviesequel28 week by and by , are based on previous picture show or works . Damselis base on an original screenplay , but it draw inspiration from Graeco-Roman fag tales . Did you look to other fantasy movies or books for inspiration when you started to makeDamsel , or did you desire to be focused on the material and take a fresh approach ?

I tend to be so focused on what I do , and attempt to be fresh , to dispute myself , and to do thing that I have n’t get wind before . That ’s my tendency as a film producer , but apparently , every moving-picture show you watch ends up being an inspiration , you get it on ?

When I was makingDamsel , I could experience the spirit ofThe Lord of the Ringshovering over the yield . peradventure that ’s due to my editor , John Gilbert , who also editedThe Fellowship of the Rings . [ laughs ]

I examine to always be fresh and new with every movie I make , though . I wish to dispute myself and opine peradventure the first thing that I call up of is n’t necessarily the right-hand one . You have to await for something else , you jazz ? Something a little bit better , something a little bit different . And that ’s the variety of physical process that I usually go through when I ’m making movies , and that ’s what happened withDamsel .

Without spoiling anything , Damsel ’s ending leaves the door open to a continuation . Are you uncoerced to chronicle Elodie ’s next escapade , wherever she ends up ?

Oh , utterly . I ’ve been involved with this moving-picture show for five years , and I put a bit of my center , my soul , into this undertaking , so I would be more than happy to helm a subsequence . I thinkDamsel ’s universe is really vainglorious and open , and I think the next story that we can tell about where Elodie and several of the other character end up is very compelling . So , yes , hands down , I would doDamsel 2for sure .
