The visual effects company Digital Domain has shared an undivided clip with Digital Trends showcasing the study that went into making one of the most polar scenes inCaptain America : Brave New World . At over eight hour long , the scene demonstrate Captain America ( Anthony Mackie ) and the Falcon ( Danny Ramirez ) intercept a scuffle over the Pacific Ocean between US and Japanese forces that could go to a full - blown war .
But what really make the scene unique is that it ’s almost entirely CGI . “ There was a lot of footage where they enchant Anthony Mackie on all these wires . But by the clock time it was over , it was all CG , ” previsualization supervisor Cameron Ward tell Digital Trends .
In the previsualization ( previs ) clip , we get a good glimpse at the early - stage CGI they used to build the fit totally from clams , let in the monumental open - ocean place setting . Ward said the biggest challenge in the scene was n’t creating such a large space . It was the speed at which all the characters and objects were travel .
“ The biggest challenge with this scene was the hurrying at which everything was go , ” Ward say . “ We had 600 - mile - per - hour missile flying through the gentle wind above an open ocean that we had to build from scratch . You have to set up your camera in a direction that feels like Cap just flew by at 600 mile an hr chasing after them . So we had to ask ourselves , how do we visualize that ? ”
Creating the characters wasn’t the only challenge
Creating the clouds was also a surprisingly hefty labor for the squad . Digital Domain create its own proprietary cloud shader tool to help produce the right sizing , shading , texture , shadows , and various levels of opaqueness that we see in veridical clouds . The squad even layered four to six cloud interpreting on top of each other to give each cloud a varying level of brightness and deepness , as we see in veridical clouds .
Light and darkness were another vast focusing for Digital Domain . Taking lieu over a contemplative Earth’s surface like water stand for the team require to accurately cheer the means sunlight reflects on the ocean . They also need to produce shadow to help give the fit a photorealistic flavour , so the team made sure to pay attention to every frame that involved a jet or part soaring through the tune so they could produce a shadower that would be cast on the sea below .
BeforeCaptain America , Ward had worked on tons of huge project , likeThe Last of Us , Black Panther : Wakanda Forever , andThunderbolts * . But he saysBrave New Worldwas his magnanimous venture yet and said that Digital Domain worked on the motion picture for an intact year . “ I ’ve been with DD for five twelvemonth , ” he say , “ and this is the biggest , long sequence I ’ve ever work on . It actually became much more CG than intended as the project went on , after they realize some of the plate did n’t make for because of things like expression in the stroke . ”
