After several geezerhood of hype and anticipation , Duneis back . Denis Villeneuve ’s mammoth version of the Frank Herbert novel of the same name has get the continuation treatment , andDune : Part 2is experience many of the same plaudits and praise thatPart 1received when it was released in 2021 . It gross over $ 80 million in its opening weekend , and is on the path to outdo its precursor .
Now that we have two theatrical role to equate , though , the innate question is which is better . WhilePart 2is certainly more action forward , and a lot of the apparatus fromPart 1is pay up off in the sequel , here are some reasonableness whyPart 1may still be the good movie .
Warner Bros.
Dune gave us our first look at Arrakis
Among the things thatPart 1does so well is earthly concern - building . There ’s a sense of grandeur and scale here that very few smash hit finagle to achieve , and much of that accomplishment comes when we ’re first introduced to the desert humankind of Arrakis .
AlthoughPart 2maintains much of the world - building that makes this series feel so typical , none of it feels quite as impressive as the totally new world that we ’re introduced to inPart 1 . Maybe it ’s just our impropriety with these environments , butPart 1did the world - construction first , and it did it best .
Dune has more time for its characters than Dune: Part Two
BecausePart 2is so centre on the actual grease monkey of Paul ’s return to power following his expatriate at the end ofPart 1 , the pic has a fiddling bit less time to focus on give its character and what the dynamics are between them .
Part 2still has moments like this , but none of them experience up to the early scenes inPart 1where you get a full sentience of what Paul ’s life was like when matter were OK for him . Part 2jumps us decent into a crisis , and while its character beats are compelling , they would n’t work at all without the more measured study done inPart 1 .
Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho is a scene-stealer (and is missed in Part Two)
It ’s not a spoiler to reveal that Jason Momoa ’s charismatic rogue , Duncan Idaho , does n’t make it out ofDunealive . The right - hand homo of Duke Leto give-up the ghost down admirably in a last - rack fight to keep an escape Paul and Lady Jessica from the invade Harkonnens .
That ’s a disgrace , as Momoa give the first movie a lively shot of vigor that cut through Paul ’s weepy moping and the sullen portentousness of the story . Duncan recall another similar sci - fi scene - stealer , Star Wars ‘ Han Solo , and both of them were needed to give levity to the story and lighten thing up a fleck with some humor . sand dune : Part Twois serious , sometimes to its detriment , and you really feel the absence seizure of his theatrical role in the plastic film .
Rebecca Ferguson had more to do in the original
Both installment ofDuneare carried by their remarkable casts , but the stealth MVP of this enfranchisement to date remains Rebecca Ferguson , who playact Lady Jessica . In the first movie , Jessica is essentially a co - wind , and it ’s clear that it ’s because of her intrigue that Paul is positioned the means that he is as a potential christ .
While Jessica remains an important player inPart 2 , she ’s have a little act less to do , and seems a little moment less human than she is inPart 1 . Movies are better when they let Ferguson cook ( just find any of the last threeMission : Impossible motion picture , which surpass because of her ) , and on that score , Part 1gets the sharpness .
