OnePlus has had a very square starting time to 2024 with the freeing of theOnePlus 12and theOnePlus 12R. While both phones look very exchangeable , one is a flagship , while the other is a more budget - friendly selection with more or less less specs .
Though both devices ’ camera appear like at first coup d’oeil , they ’re actually quite unlike . In addition to unlike spec , only the OnePlus 12 has Hasselblad branding , mean that it has better people of colour standardization , white balance and vulnerability , and more . In short , photos you take with the OnePlus 12 ’s Hasselblad television camera areprobablygoing to look ripe .

But is it enough of a divergence to make the $ 799 OnePlus 12 deserving it over the $ 499 OnePlus 12R ? That ’s what we ’re here to find out .
OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R: camera specs
Before we plunge into the photos , let ’s take a look at the computer hardware first .
The OnePlus 12 has an telling triple - lens photographic camera arrangement on the rear : a 50 - megapixel main lens , a 64MP periscope telephoto photographic camera with 3x optic zoom , and a 48MP ultrawide camera . For the selfie shooter , it has a 32MP crystalline lens .
With the OnePlus 12R , there ’s a 50MP main crap-shooter , an 8MP ultrawide television camera , and a 2MP macro lens of the eye on the rear . The selfie television camera is only 16MP , which is better than other phones in this price chain , but not quite up there with the OnePlus 12 .
OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R: main camera
Both the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R have a 50MP main television camera , but again , only the OnePlus 12 has Hasselblad colour tuning . So , let ’s see if that really makes a difference in exposure .
We ’ll depart off with one of my favorite survey at Disney California Adventure Park : the waterfront at Pixar Pier . Both photos are astute and elaborate when you soar upwards in . But the OnePlus 12R version appears a shade warm in tone , and the sky seems a small washed - out when compared to the OnePlus 12 picture . The red underground on the Incredicoaster also have more orange undertones , draw it come out bright . The Pixar Pier logo is also a bit lighter than it should be in the 12R ikon , though one could fence that it looks better in some ways .
There are professional and flimflam to both images , but I prefer the OnePlus 12 ’s for the more vibrant and realistic colors that do n’t appear wash - out .
Here ’s a looking at the unbelievable Millennium Falcon at Batuu moolah sculpture that ’s in Disney ’s Grand Californian Hotel as part of the Season of the Force celebrations . While the simulacrum seem similar , it attend like the OnePlus 12R had some issue with focus on the rock music formation behind the Falcon , as some of them come out soft in detail and blurry .
The OnePlus 12 version attend a lot sharper overall , as you could make out the finer texture and details in the Falcon and the rocks . The megrims and purpleness also look way more vibrant with the OnePlus 12 , which may be due to the Hasselblad color tuning .
This is another one of my favorite views at Disneyland : the weewee for the Finding Nemo submarine voyage . Both image look ripe at first coup d’oeil , but the OnePlus 12 depart further with texture and overall point , which is evident with the tilt and waterfall in the back , as well as the rock that Hank the devilfish is sitting on top of . The yellow submarines and the color of the social system in the setting also look a bit wash - out in the OnePlus 12R figure of speech .
There was a car show being held near me , though it was almost over by the time I arrived . I still snapped this warm photograph of a Porsche ( forgive me , I ’m not a car person , so I do n’t know the model ) . The Hasselblad color tuning on the OnePlus 12 work out well for this shot , as the silver read up well , and there ’s more contrast and detail in the photo . To me , the OnePlus 12R version just looks a bit dull and exanimate .
Winner : OnePlus 12
OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R: ultrawide camera
There ’s a very everlasting divergence between the OnePlus 12 ’s 48MP ultrawide television camera and the OnePlus 12R ’s 8MP ultrawide lens , at least on paper . Does that interpret to genuine - world use ? Yes , yes , it does .
I flick a quick ultrawide shot of the rose garden at the local park near my family , which I typically do for these camera comparisons . It ’s very evident how much unspoiled the OnePlus 12 ’s 48MP ultrawide tv camera is compare to the measly 8MP torpedo on the OnePlus 12R.
The OnePlus 12R version just lacks detail when you take a tight aspect at it ; nothing is particularly sharp . On the other hand , the OnePlus 12 has everything in focus , and you could make out all the finer contingent and textures even in the distance . The colors are also lawful to sprightliness and vibrant . There ’s no contest here .
OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R: close-ups
I thought about naming this section “ telephotograph camera , ” but then I call back — the OnePlus 12R does not have a telephotograph lens at all . It would n’t be quite clean to compare the OnePlus 12 ’s 64MP periscope telephoto lens of the eye with 3x optical zoom to , well , nothing . alternatively , here , we ’ll take a look at both phones ’ zoom capacity and shut down - up shot .
Let ’s start with a zoomed - in shot of some laurel wreath trees in the neighborhood . Since the OnePlus 12R does not have a telephotograph lens system , it swear on digital rapid climb . I used 3x rapid growth here to match the 3x optical zoom of the OnePlus 12 .
The OnePlus 12R has muddied and soft detail and almost resemble a watercolour painting — not a good look . But the OnePlus 12 ’s 3x ocular zoom is sharp and vindicated and does a good chore of cause the details and texture right . The colors also look lave - out in the OnePlus 12R interpretation , while the OnePlus 12 is accurate and captures the glow of the setting sun .
I jazz outpouring because of all the blooming bloom , though some years have still been quite murky and showery here in Southern California . This is a vibrant orange heyday that I come across on a paseo . Both epitome appear good on the Earth’s surface , but the OnePlus 12 border out the 12R by having more focus on the heyday ’s pistil , which is a bit fuzzy in the 12R photo . texture on the petal also appear much better on the OnePlus 12 image , and the Hasselblad colouring material tuning is on breaker point .
This close - up of some pink bloom look almost superposable between both phones . The OnePlus 12R did a skilful job with this one than on the orange flower , as the center pistils are just as shrill as in the OnePlus 12 interpretation . Background bokeh levels are pretty much the same , and the only difference I can really make out is that the fleeceable leave of absence in the OnePlus 12 version are slightly more vibrant , but that ’s about it .
OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R: lowlight
There was a meter when you could not depend on a smartphone to take decent photograph in lowlight state of affairs , but that has absolutely deepen in 2024 . Most flagship phones are capable of taking some passably full lowlight pic thanks to dedicated night mode , and even budget - well-disposed phones typically have this feature article through software system now . But of course , the computer hardware still makes all the difference .
I snapped this shot of the night sky from my back door , and both headphone go into Night mode for about one irregular for this scene . The OnePlus 12R make the sky look artificially like it was daytime or at least twilight / sundown , but it was take at 8:30 p.m. when the sun was gone for at least an hour . And when you take a aspect at the trees , they appear a number muddled and lack particular .
The OnePlus 12 , on the other bridge player , did a better occupation of handling this scene than its lower - priced sibling . The Nox sky is glowering , which is more revelatory of the time it was carry , and it does n’t count phony or contrived . The detail in the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree are also much precipitous and readable — this is specially patent in the tree limb and the palm tree diagram leaves . Thanks to the darker sky , it is sluttish to see the stars due to the higher contrast .
I snapped a photo of our Siberian Husky , Wolf , who was sit down patiently as I was snapping photos of the sky . I did struggle a number more with the OnePlus 12R on this , as the slightest morsel of movement from my husky would result in a blurry simulacrum — the OnePlus 12 would also get bleary , but to a more or less lesser degree .
This was the just image I could get out of multiple attempts . The OnePlus 12 did a much better job here , as you could easily see the detail and texture with the fur , whereas the OnePlus 12R appears softer and blurrier . Contrast is higher on the OnePlus 12 as well , which show off the opprobrious and snowy color of the husky better . The OnePlus 12R epitome also just looks a bit washed - out overall , especially in terms of the rampart and cement grain .
OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R: selfies and portraits
Ever since phones protrude to include Portrait modal value , it ’s been one of my preferred way to take photos with my smartphones . Of of course , you may get better portraits with a consecrate television camera , but I think most phones have done a pretty good job , all things turn over .
Please mark that since the OnePlus 12R does not have the same zoom capabilities as the OnePlus 12 , I ’m only comparing the Portrait musical mode images at 1x . The OnePlus 12R does have 2x and 3x zoom for Portraits , but I did not employ those for sample distribution as it would n’t be a fair compare .
Let ’s embark on with this portraiture picture I charter of my hubby . Both image are good , but the OnePlus 12 slightly edges out the 12R in term of sharpness detection . you could see some notched bits in his hair where it seems like the computer software could n’t differentiate between the boundary of the haircloth with the leaves and the nebulous sky behind him . The 12R also scramble with detecting his right paw , as it look like it just flux in with the ground at the park . The OnePlus 12 did n’t seem to have these issues with edge detection as much , though there is a tiny bit on his right capitulum that seems a moment off .
However , the OnePlus 12R did seem to be more accurate for his skin tone , but the colour of the jacket and jeans are more vibrant and accurate with the OnePlus 12 . I ’m not a lover of how the OnePlus 12 seemed to make him appear darker with crimson undertones .
Here ’s a portrait of me in the ballpark . Again , the OnePlus 12 does a better job with boundary detection , as there ’s a morsel of a weird , jagged bit on the left over side of my pilus in the OnePlus 12R image . I also prefer the overall tone of the OnePlus 12 interpretation , which feel a second on the cooler side , while the 12R is warm . color , specially pelt tone , are well reflected in the OnePlus 12 double as well .
Lastly , here ’s a portrait of my daughter set for the television camera . I much prefer the OnePlus 12 image here , as the colors are much more accurate and true to life . The OnePlus 12R come out very washed - out in comparability . Again , edge detection is better with the OnePlus 12 .
As far as selfies go , this is one I crack quickly with both phones . As you’re able to see , the OnePlus 12R image appear very wash - out , fix me look pale than I really am . The OnePlus 12 persona is much good , with more vivacious and accurate colors , including skin note . It just await better overall .
Hasselblad does, in fact, matter
Though the OnePlus 12R does n’t takebadphotos , there is distinctly a significant difference of opinion between it and the OnePlus 12 ’s Hasselblad people of colour calibration . And it ’s not just the Hasselblad partnership , either — the OnePlus 12 has better overall television camera hardware , too .
As you’re able to see from these camera samples , the OnePlus 12 is vastly superior to its more affordable sibling . The larger megapixel count does weigh as it helps hold back all of the finer item and textures in your photos . And the Hasselblad colouring tuning results in more accurate and accurate vividness . With the OnePlus 12R , when you take a closer feeling at the images , things do n’t come out as sharp as they could be , and in many of my samples , colors look washed - out and need editing .
Of course , the OnePlus 12R is still a expectant value phone . But if you want the inviolable best camera potential without breaking the bank , I recall the OnePlus 12 is worth the supernumerary immediate payment in the closing .
