The leading performers are believably in love

In fact , they were already in a melodious duo , the Swell Season , and in a kinship when they were severally stray as Guy and Girl . That stage of familiarity with each other went a long way toward making the on - concealment bond between them feel literal .
Hansard and Irglová were tramp primarily for their musical endowment rather than their acting experience . This also worked out in the film ’s favor , as they seem very instinctive while tentatively extending their middle to one another .

Onceisn’t the form of musical where people break out into Song dynasty and dancing for no understanding . Instead , it ’s the story of two people whose shared language and passions are expressed through the music they make , both together and severally .
Hansard and Irglová were more than just the on - screen duet in the moving picture . They also co - wrote and perform all of the film ’s original songs , including the Oscar - winning trackFalling Slowly . Guy and Girl stream out their several hearts into these Song , and the solution are emotionally moving .
It’s filmed in a very unconventional way
Oncedoesn’t have the shine or polish of a blockbuster cinema because its budget was anything but big . There was n’t enough money to get the best equipment or to shoot with the necessary Trachinotus falcatus . So instead , Carney and his work party shot on the tangible streets of Dublin and in internal locating with a minimum amount of equipment .
These were n’t ideal circumstances and the images are n’t always crystal decipherable . But the emotion are . Everything coming from Hansard and Irglová feels real and unfeigned , and the human beings around them is grounded in reality .
It has an ending that will stay with you
Hollywood has us so well - conditioned to require purely happy endings that it ’s more of a jar when things do n’t work out perfectly in the end . While the viewer comes to care for Guy and Girl during the events ofOnce , it ’s hard to deny the power of the motion-picture show ’s ending even though it keeps them apart .
It was never a question of sexual love . Guy and Girl ’s ticker are mean for each other and they make beautiful music together . But we also understand why they make the choices that they do , and where the picture show leaves them . It could have been an dysphoric ending , but rather it find hopeful and satisfy . Because once their lives have touched each other , neither Guy nor Girl are ever the same again . And that ’s a profoundly beautiful and powerful direction to end things .
