You ’ll be forgiven if you have n’t diligently follow the saga that has been the sale of Paramount to … well , to whomever could in the end get a deal done . It ’s been a long mental process with more than its part of parallels to the HBO dramaSuccession , include multiple stockholder classes , multiple parent fellowship , and a masses of personalities at the top of the food chain .

The end resolution ? After month of shopping around , and months of negotiations , Paramount Global and Skydance Media plan to coalesce . ( The deal is n’t 100 % done ; there ’s a 45 - day “ go - shop ” period in which Paramount can field better offer . ) The two companies are hardly strangers , of course . Paramount has been around in one form or another for more than 100 years . Skydance is simply in its 20s , but it ’s the studio behind such hits as the latter Mission : unacceptable movie , two Star Trek motion-picture show , and , of track , Top Gun : Maverick , among many others .

One big question coming out of the fusion , though , is this : What ’s going to happen toParamount+ ? The swarm serve already has undergone one major renovation after ViacomCBS rebranded to Paramount , and CBS All Access rebranded to Paramount+ .

The short solution is that we do n’t really know just yet . But judging from a July 8 league call , it does n’t sound like Paramount+ is going anywhere anytime soon , though there ’s going to be some serious oeuvre done under the strong-armer .

“ Our intention is to rebuild the Paramount+ weapons platform , ” David Ellison , founder and CEO of Skydance , said on the conference call . “ And ( we ) believe that with the technical big businessman and relationships that we have , we can expand our [ direct - to - consumer ] business . ”

engineer - to - consumer , or DTC , basically is industry talk for any sort of subscription service . If you could signalise up immediately , without hold up through some other provider first , that ’s DTC . And that sort of affair need a huge amount of work behind the scenes ( as we recently get a line in a sit - down with an Amazon Prime Video White House ) .

Ellison quickly got into the weeds : “ We can improve our algorithmic [ recommendation ] locomotive to basically increase time spent on platform , reduce butter churn , and drive lifetime value for all of our shareholders , ” he go forward . “ We can optimise the advertizing technical school and improve the biocide for transparency and audience reach . And we also mean to unify the cloud providers across all the distribution services for significant efficiencies . ”

That ’s all important stuff for any cyclosis serving , and certainly a sign that Paramount+ will be around for a while .

Morgan Stanley ’s Benjamin Swinburne , during the Q&A , pointed out that Skydance had resisted doing its own streaming service and wondered if the musical theme of “ pay off out of the DTC business ” was on the tabular array post - fusion .

“ I think we all have intercourse , plainly , cyclosis is an implausibly important part of the business , and very much the future of the business , ” Ellison said .

And that future may well admit even bigger streaming bundles than we have today .

“ Everybody here on this call probably watches telly , ” said Jeff Shell , chairwoman of athletics and medium at RedBird Capital , which has a big wager in Skydance . He ’s also the former CEO of NBCUniversal . “ The experience right now is not great . If you have all these stream services , you desire to watch something , you do n’t recognize if you get it . You have to stress to commemorate where it is . For most consumer , it ’s jolly expensive . ”

The way of life forward , Shell mused , may well look more like what many sharpen out resemble the day of the cable system bundle .

“ I personally think , eventually , the stream world is perish to wait very similar to the way that the multi - channel world looked in the past times , ” he said . Where you ’re going to have a number of Robert William Service . And for a consumer , they ’re going to have favorite brand . But they ’re going to want a one - stop shop class with a skillful [ electronic scheduling pathfinder ] , and a gracious technological way to find what they want to look for . And Ellison was even more unambiguous following the league call in a podcast visual aspect onThe Town with Matthew Belloni .

“ On the tech platform side , ” he said , “ there is a substantial amount of thing we can do to build Paramount+ into a truly differentiated engineering science platform . That is a precedency and focus for us . It ’s not shutting down or pop off that outer space . ”

So wait Paramount+ to be around for a right , long while . Expect more content . look more bundles . But as for what that means for your wallet ? remain tuned .
