I just got back from a visit with Samsung in New Jersey , where I got early access to some 2024 telly . It ’s a head trip I ’ve been looking forrader to sinceCES , where , quite frankly , Samsung hadso many products to look at and incubate at its First Lookthat it was hard to plunk into anything with any existent depth .
Today , we ’re going to take a unaired aspect at the 2024 Samsung QN900D — Samsung ’s flagship 8 K TV this twelvemonth . But before I plunge into the video , let me deal expectation a act . The good news is I start out to measure several telly during my sojourn and do a honest bit of subjective analysis , so I have some thing to say about flick lineament for each example that I ’ll cover over the follow days . Still , I only got a few hours with the TVs , so these are not full reviews .
With that in head , let ’s talk about the .

What’s new
Let ’s be honest:8 K telly are a tough sell these mean solar day . And Samsung is one of the last major TV manufacturers to put actual campaign into an8 K video lineup .
While it used to be that the good technology was set aside for 8 cat valium tv — you ’d bribe one to have the good tech , not for the 8 K settlement — that ’s not entirely the case anymore . Samsung ’s 4 K Neo QLEDs have killer tech in them , too . But , still , Samsung ’s 8 thousand lineup gets all the goodies , and the QN900D is at the top of the card . So it ’s dependable to say that the QN900D is the best Neo QLED TV that Samsung makes .
So , how does Samsung ’s best QLED TV look ? Pretty freaking fantastic . I ’ll get into that in a moment . First , here ’s a quick monitor about what ’s new for this mannequin this year .

This may be the thinnest 8 K television receiver I ’ve see . Thin is still in , even though it seems like we ’re a bit more forgiving of duncish boob tube if the photograph carrying out is there .
We hope this translates to even better upscaling and cleansing of low - spot - astuteness content .
But really , much of what ’s newfangled is not stuff I could really dig into much on this short trip . We ’re talk about a refreshed Tizen sassy TV OS , include a new Health App , newSmartThings implementations , and a newKnox Security chip , which in the end makes this Smart TV as secure as your phone . This is more important than ever .

The QN900D also gets Samsung ’s all - Modern NQA AI Gen 3 processor , which features an on - fleck AI locomotive engine twice as fast as before and sports eight time the neuronic meshing . What we go for this interpret to is even well upscaling and killing of low - bit - depth cognitive content like the stuff you get from a lot of streaming services , including Samsung ’s own boob tube Plus . Apparently , the fresh processor does a best job of taking depleted - resolution cognitive content and upscaling it to 4 K before finally scaling that up to 8 kB for display on the tv set ’s 8 kilobyte panel . That ’s important , because it ’s suffer that low - solvent cognitive content up to the 4 K level that ’s super heavily . Upscaling 4 K to 8 K is n’t nearly as ruffianly , and Samsung mastered that art a while ago .
For sports fans , the new AI processor ( wetalked with Samsung about itback at CES ) is reportedly voguish enough to discern a ball — like a association football ball , football , lawn tennis glob , and even something as small as a golf game testicle — and apply some clarity to that ball , even as it moves quickly . Anyone who has watch golf on YouTube knows the tiny orb is often a mess as it go across the screen . That ’s because there ’s very little picture data for that little object , and so it comes across as a characterless white heap on the screen . I have high hope for this new central processing unit , and that ’s definitely something I ’m going to scrutinize in the full review .
I should also mention that the QN900D can do up to a 240HZ variable refresh rate for gaming , which is Brobdingnagian . I have n’t check the reference resolution limitations on that or on the nose how Samsung is pulling that off , but I ’ll be diving into that in the full reappraisal as well .
8K TVs are incredible, but have yet to catch on due to high costs and limited native resolution content.Zeke Jones / Digital Trends
How it looks
What I can recite you right now , though , is that Samsung ’s upscaling has remove a famed leap forward . I tested some low - resolution and low - bit - rate cyclosis content on this video and was mighty impressed . Samsung has closed the gap with Sony around upscaling and motion resolution to the point that it ’s going to be a sozzled race this year .
As for measurements , here ’s what I have so far . The QN900D depend passing good in its Filmmaker mode , both for SDR andHDR .
erroneous belief were well below the visible threshold across a whole rooms of tests . The white balance and color accuracy were excellent , and the TV did n’t overly brighten anything in this manner , which is good because that means Samsung is honoring the accuracy that Filmmaker modality is mean to offer .

But if you want this TV to over - brighten thing a bit , it sure will . And I call up that ’s going to make a lot of family line happy when they look out drear HDR content — because it will make that dark cognitive content comfortable to see in a way other than one that ’s pitch mordant .
It ’s potential Samsung keep down backlight anomalousness at the disbursal of just a bit more brightness .
Speaking of brightness , the QN900D add up through at 2,400 nits peak blank from a 10 % windowpane ( more on that in a moment ) . More impressive was the QN900D ’s HDR colour truth . Often , this goes out the window , even with TVs that have impressive SDR colour truth . But the QN900D really held it together , even when it was reaching for the mavin with far - out BT.2020 colors .
As for the TV ’s local blur system , I observed lightning - quick backlight dimming , which mean that when whitened subtitle text disappear or transitioned off a black letterbox ginmill , very petty flush was left behind .
In fact , blooming and halo issue were pretty minimal . I did n’t count zones , but the ring core was minimal — even off - axis , which is very telling . While I do n’t know the backlight reckoning and the zona count for this television , I can say that whatever Samsung has used , it ’s very efficacious .
That may account for the telly ’s perhaps dispirited - than - hoped - for peak brightness measurements . It ’s possible Samsung reduced backlight anomaly at the expense of just a bit more brightness . I think that was the good call . There will always be a trade - off between peak brightness and halo / blooming restraint when we ’re talking aboutLCD TVs .
Now , when I say “ lower - than - hoped - for ” peak brightness , I ’m not talk about my personal promise . Rather , I think there ’s been some Bob Hope build up among TV enthusiasts that ifTCL and Hisenseare wrench out 5,000- and 10,000 - nitmini - conduce boob tube , something like the QN900D would plug a little higher in the cleverness category .
Holy moly , does it get bright — almost 800 nit full - blind white , which is loco .
I do n’t think that ever was or should have been a foregone last . First off , those sky - high-pitched flagships from Hisense and TCL are indisputable to be a mountain of money — right smart more than the QN900D here . Second , we do n’t yet know how functionally valuable that brightness is work to be .
So , do n’t get cling up on those brightness routine . The QN900D here is no slouch of a TV . Holy moly , does it get promising — almost 800 nits full - screen Edward D. White , which is nuts .
In the remnant , I was very impressed with the QN900D. It ’s promising , super - colorful , and delightfully exact if you want it to be . Plus , it ’s justloadedwith features , unlike any other video brand out there . It ’s a pricey telecasting , yes , but you sure do get a lot with it .
In an effort to offer even more with this TV , Samsung is run a short - term promotion wherein if you preorder the QN900D , you ’ll get a spare 65 - inch TV . Here ’s the QN900D preorder pageboy with more detail if you are interested .
