Unfortunately for the human race , Proxima b explodes , and the blast make significant damage to Ark One . The final here and now ofThe Arkseason 1 finish regard Lt . Sharon Garnet ( Christie Burke ) , Lt . James Brice ( Richard Fleeshman ) , Lt . Spencer Lane ( Reece Ritchie ) , and Alicia Nevins ( Stacey Read ) scrambling to find survivors .
The Arkseason 2jumps right into the consequence of the plosion . While Ark One experienced several casualties , there are some noted subsister , including Felix Strickland ( Pavle Jerinić ) , Eva Markovic ( Tiana Upcheva ) , and Angus Medford ( Ryan Adams ) . With the fate of the human race at stake , Ark One must pivot to discover another new home .
In an interview with Digital Trends , several members fromThe Arkcast and work party – including Burke , Read , Adams , and carbon monoxide gas - showrunners / executive producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner — discussed what fan can look in the upcoming episodes and how they approached a new set of challenge in time of year 2 .
Warning : This clause contains spoilers for The Ark season 2 ’s premier episode .
Digital Trends : As showrunners , what ’s severe to do — pop out from wampum on the first time of year or build on the success of the first and compose a second season ?
Jonathan Glassner : You know , I imagine they ’re both equally hard . You ’re starting with a blank page and saying , “ Oh , God , where are we gon na go ? ”
Dean Devlin : They’re very dissimilar challenge . The first challenge — can we make something that hoi polloi are going to revel ? But then , if they really enjoyed it , like the 6.5 million masses that observe the first time of year , now you feel this responsibility to go to a whole ‘ nother level . You owe it to them . So I think that they ’re every bit arduous , but in very different ways .
Glassner : Yeah , I mean , I ’ll secern you when you ’re writing a time of year , the whole time you ’re say , “ Am I writing us into a corner ? Are we give way to be able to do another season if we end this way ? ” We ’re very careful about pull up stakes a whole caboodle of stuff to answer for the next time of year . This time of year , we started out already knowing that we had this , this , this , this , and this that we wanted to do . It ’s just what order to put it in .
Christie , coming into this season , you already have this foundation [ for your character ] established in season 1 . What was the prep like forseason 2 ? Did a lot of things exchange ? Were you able-bodied to step right into the character again because of the stem you built in season 1 ?
Christie Burke : Well , I feel like I work out more because I was like , “ Oh man . I really go to overreach up a lot of like seven - foot Serbian stunt swell . ” I was like , “ I wanna really do that and make it look real because I do all my own stunt on the show . ” So yeah , I got in the gym as lame as that sounds . [ laugh ] They just are so tall in Serbia ! It ’s mad .
If you accidentally punch one of them , it ’s like score cement . And I was like I require to be able to do that good . And yeah , getting worked up for where they ’re going to take Garnett this season . They take her to so many amazing places , and I felt like we had bare job with her . We did n’t have sex everything there is to know about her , and we still do n’t by the end of the season .
That ’s your rite of passage , press a Serbian .
Burke:100 % . That , and a three - page soliloquy to a crowd of Serbians who have no idea what you ’re saying … I love it . [ laugh ]
Glassner : Christie was a stunt woman in another life . I ’m win over .
Burke : No way . [ laugh ]
Glassner : She ’s very good at it , and she ’s fearless .
Stacey and Ryan , for your season 2 prep , what changed for you , have intercourse you had that base [ for your fictional character ] to build from in time of year 1 ?
Stacey Read : With season 1 , it was pretty much like we would n’t get all the episodes at once . We ’d get them sent as we were shooting . With that , it was compute out the quality and building a character , essentially . extend into season 2 , like you said , we already have that base . With this time of year , it was more of , I have my character , and now she ’s been put in these post . How does the berth make her develop ? How does this affect her on a more long - term exfoliation ? That ’s kind of what I initiate to appear at .
Ryan Adams : I imagine , for me , it was n’t on the button like I could just keep where I left off because my first proper view in time of year 2 is waking up not fuck what take place and not really in a effectual state of head at all . It was all about strain to find that edge to him [ Angus ] when he really should n’t be waking up because of Kelly ’s blood in his system .
Not know why he ’s there , not know why he ’s live , not knowing why Kelly is stand right there . The last time when he saw Kelly , she had her workforce around his cervix . He has so many questions . He ’s immediately not the same individual , and it was really cool progressing with that episode by episode .
How early on did you [ Ryan ] find out that you may potentially die ?
Adams : Oh my gosh . [ laugh ] I ’m not sure . I call up … Stacey , when did we get episode 1 ? perhaps like a calendar month before we started shoot ?
Read : Yeah , I think .
Oh , wow . That ’s pretty close .
Ryan Adams : Yeah , I think no one really knew the nation of their own character until we got send that script . Everyone ’s conservatively turning the pageboy like , “ Do n’t be me . Do n’t die . Do n’t die . ” And then when I sire to me , and I read how brute it was as well , I ’m like there ’s no room this kid can survive that . There ’s no way . Yeah , it ’s always shuddery . I mean , I was contracted for all of time of year 1 . I ’m not contracted for all of season 2 , so I was really , reallyscared . [ laughs ]
I intend you did have chicken feed hang out of your chest , so if you could make it that , it ’s going take a lot to kill you .
President Adams : Yeah , exactly . Exactly ! Angus , a hard guy to toss off .
Jonathan , introducing all of the characters and laying the groundwork for the show ingest up a lot [ of meter in ] of time of year 1 . Now that you have that done , what would you say is the main task for season2 ?
Glassner : Well , I signify , the true truth is we have n’t finish with the character . There ’s a pot of their history and mystery they have that get discover this time of year . It ’s a dull unpeeling of the Allium cepa . Also , by doing that , we get wind about what chance on Earth a little spot more and the politics of Earth before the launch .
Dean , when wespoke about the final stage of season 1 , you said the show may not be for everyone , but for the people who really like it , it fills a pauperism . It ’s this fandom where the viewer feels like they own the show . They get to hang out with their friends once a week . How do you keep that same tactile sensation and sentiment alive in time of year 2 ?
Dean Devlin : Well , we really strain to honor the fans . Someone was asking us originally if we shift the narration based on suggestions we see onTwitter . No , we do n’t , but you do get wind what they [ the fans ] need to feel and the emotions that drive them to watch over the show . The more we understand that , the more we feel it , the more we want to serve that . Yes , this takes place in outer space , and yes , there ’s skill around it .
But I do n’t intend anyone who really watch the show is take in it to get a science lesson . I call up they watch it because they strike in love with these character , and they want to see what ’s gon na happen to them next . Our goal : What are interesting science fiction conception where we can put stories that search these fiber and the now very intense relationships that have develop over the course of study of these many episodes ?
There is an endearing , sometimes awkward , and dear kinship between Alicia and Angus . What can rooter expect in term of Latinian language and friendship for season 2 ?
disco biscuit : I call up you could expect a peck of Alicia and Angus content . I mean , we ’ve got some really cool scenes together . We did a luck of work together this season . Everyone and their female parent knows that Angus and Alicia really like each other and want this to happen . It ’s just see a time for it to happen , evidently with Angus being in such a bad state at the beginning and Alicia running the show . Yeah , it will be fun to see when that happens , and if that happens .
the great unwashed really react to this show . It feels like a tight - rumple community of interests pass judgment by the fan reaction . How do you and thecastkeep that fast - crumple residential area live for the 2d time of year ?
Adams : Oh , man . I mean it always help liking everyone , you know . [ laughs ]
It ’s obvious , but not always reliable .
Adams : You’re right . Yeah . We ’re really prosperous that everybody on the show is so lovely and so supportive . I intend , we eff that firsthand . come onto this show as newcomers , [ we ] literally fix so much sustenance , patience , and warmth from the crew and the actors . We just acquire so much from them . Yeah , everyone ’s just really prissy . There ’s some new character this season . [ The new characters ] are very , verynice . Ca n’t wait for you to run into them .
Read : Yeah , I think what ’s really nice about it is we went on a show , and we encounter Modern people , but I think existent friendship have come out of it . A few of us are U.K.-based , so I ’ve met with Shalini [ Peiris ] . I ’ve suffer Jess [ Yemi ] , who plays Naomi . She ’s doing a course here in London at the import . I satisfy her just the other week . I met Ryan just like two weeks ago . We ’re actually friends [ laugh ] , like we ’re all really closelipped in real life .
Adams : We really do like each other . It ’s not just for the television camera ! [ laugh ]
I will check that to pen that down in the clause . That you really wish each other .
Adams : Nice !
Christie , one of the master storylines in season 1 was who will take the leaders function of the ark . ThisGame of Thronespolitical conflict for leadership . At the end of it , you ’re the headwaiter now . fix that was the end for Garnet in season 1 . What is her motive and end for season 2 ?
Burke : I think to complete the mission . I signify , it was n’t that hard to get the leading role . You know what I mean ? [ express mirth ] I was get by with two dumbos . No , I ’m just kid . I think it ’s the same . I think the mission is to save humanity and get them [ the passenger ] to a major planet .
Then , I truly believe Garnett has no idea . Once she completes that mission , what amount next ? What does she require to do ? I think her whole objective is altruistic . She ’s just trying to salve these hoi polloi . Once she gets there , if we ever do see her get there , what does she require ? I think that ’s what ’s really exciting about our show is that we get to see more of what Garnett want this season .
What ’s bully is what Dean was saying that there are more relationship [ this time of year ] . These people have love each other now and have been through a muckle of high - stake situations . They ’ve seen the good of them or the worst of them .
Through that , maybe relationship romantically develop , or maybe they do n’t , or maybe they set forth hating each other . These are real human beings who form tangible relationships . I think masses are going to be really surprised about what happens .
