I govern my first folding smartphone , the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 , in February of this year . I was delirious , but I was alsomore than a footling apprehensive . This was an totally novel shape factor for me , as I ’d never used a fold smartphone before . I ’d used phones , I ’d used tablets , but I ’d never used both of them at the same meter .
At the starting signal of my experience , I was worried principally about how much I ’d use the phone ’s headline feature : the big inner video display . After all , if I did n’t end up using it , did n’t that shoot down the whole point of the gimmick ?

Three month on , I ’m felicitous to report that theGalaxy Z Fold 5is a phenomenal smartphone — and I love the internal exhibit ! However , my clock time with it has highlighted a different job , which , while not a heap breaker , has been a genuine pain in the neck . gratefully , it seems that Samsung already cognize this is an issue , as it may be fixing it with theSamsung Galaxy zed Fold 6 .
The inner screen is incredible at what it does
It would be a mistake to say this exceptional problem cast a pall over my time with the Z Fold 5 — because it did n’t . Samsung ’s most herculean foldable smartphone is a technological triumph . It ’s powerful , quick , and has a salutary battery and a very capable camera . But as you might expect , it ’s the inner display that ’s the cherry tree on top of a very tasty cake .
Oddly , after the gewgaw of the first week , I did n’t use the inner display all that much . The 7.6 - in screen is gorgeous , but as it ’s a tab - sized and -shaped display , it ’s more difficult to employ than a standard telephone screen . web site and apps are much easier to read , yes , but it ’s also much more difficult to control with a single helping hand . It ’s a duple - hand setup , really , and if I ’m out and about , then there are relatively few case where using it unfolded is idealistic .
So , I was right to think the Z Fold 5 ’s privileged show was something of a white-hot elephant , right ? Well , not really . There ’s no better phone for follow TV while doing job , for instance . read manga on theShonen Jump appis incredible , and I ’m not certain how I ever take manga without it . The same applies toe - Holy Scripture , as the Z Fold 5 has peril to eclipse myKindle Paperwhiteas my go - to east - ledger reader . It ’s also cracking for showing people photo and videos ; enter the blind to display a photo , and even people on the other final stage of a long eating house mesa can see it .
Sure , the inner video display is n’t a mainstay of my unremarkable role — but that does n’t really matter because that ’s not what it ’s good for . It ’s not what you use for flicking through social media feeds , browsing the internet , or take picture . Itcanbe used for those , but it truly surpass at recital , watching , and communion . For me , it being so skilful when Ineed it to beis more than enough to keep me happy .
So , if the inner display is n’t a problem , what ’s been the issue ? Unfortunately , it ’s the out display .
The outer display lacks attention and polish
It resist to reason that if I ’m not using the internal exhibit , I ’m using the outer display . On paper , it ’s also great . The 6.2 - inch screen has the same Dynamic AMOLED 2X tech as the larger inner display , and it has the same 120Hz refresh charge per unit , too . The 2316 x 904 result is piercing and laconic , and it gets more than shiny enough , even in firm sunlight .
But the more eagle - eyeball among you may have already noticed the oddity : 2316 x 904 is aweirdresolution . It comes out to an look ratio of 23.1:9 , and honestly , it even read oddly on a specification sheet . It ’s narrow-minded . It’stoonarrow . And I could live with this narrowness if it did n’t make the display wandering and inconsistent .
Using Twitter ( or X , if you must ) showed it at its worst . gain the like button was akin to spinning a roulette bicycle , and I could never tell whether I would really like the tweet in question or open a new page . In short , I was miss the like button an terrible lot , and missing it would knock down me out of my feed and into the tweet itself — which is n’t where I wanted it to be . sure enough , this was n’t a huge problem , but it was annoying , especially when I circularise my chemical reaction like candy on Halloween . Missing buttons on Twitter has never been an takings before , and I can only assume the narrower projection screen is to blame . There were other apps where this trouble clip up , too , but I drop far too much time on Twitter , so it ’s there I noticed it most often .
video are even worse . The inner display is the obvious nursing home for videos , but every now and again , I just want to rapidly look on a television without opening the twist up . Unfortunately , the narrow-minded aspect proportion smushes video down importantly , with vertical quad being at a serious premium when the Z Fold 5 is rotated sideways . Youcanwatch TV this way , but every prison term I try , it just leaves me feeling like I ’m watching it on someone else ’s phone . From across a street . It ’s really bad .
As I said , it ’s no plenty breaker , but it is very annoying . Use the out cover for anything other than some basic scrolling or chatting , and you ’ll find it lacking . And that ’s especially gall because it ’s the exhibit I wager people use most of the prison term .
The Z Fold is a great foldable, but it needs to be a great smartphone too
My meter with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has shown me Samsung knows how to make an first-class foldable smartphone . But the Z Fold is a phone of two halves , and really , it was only the fold screen that excel . Most of the clock time I spend using the outer display felt like a via media . It was n’t a bounty experience in its own right ; it felt like Samsung say , “ I reckon , if you really must . ”
The outer exhibit feels like a vehicle for getting you to the interior screen , and that ’s reflected in the software . start the earphone up , and it ’ll teleport the same app you were looking at onto the inner display as if by magic . But it does n’t work the other direction without digging into the configurations app , and that ’s close enough to an admission that Samsung does n’t really ask people to want to go from a large screen door to a little one . The outer display just is n’t as significant as the intimate , but itshouldbe , because it ’s the screen people are going to utilise most of the fourth dimension .
Thankfully , a brighter future is on the horizon . Rumors say the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be shorter and widerand will exchange the facet ratio of the outer show to a far more useable 20:9 . This is the same aspect proportion as theGoogle Pixel 8 Proand would make the tabu display a much more practicable vista — and heck , a moderately formidable smartphone in its own right .
And really , that ’s the counsel Samsung needs to move in .
