While my primary equipment these days continues to be myiPhone 15 Pro , I ’ve dabbled with mint ofAndroid phonessince I ’ve been here at Digital Trends . One of my favorite brands of phone has been the Google Pixel because of its strong entourage of photo - redaction tools and good camera hardware .
When I see this announcement , I realized just how far behind Apple has catch on its aboriginal pic - redaction tools in the Photos app . It ’s been get behind behind Google for a while , and with this latest update , it ’s only gotten bad .

Apple has a lot of catching up to do
Since I always have myiPhone 15 Prowith me , it ’s the machine that I mainly take the most photograph with . A lot of my photograph these sidereal day are of my daughter and I do n’t ordinarily make edits to those unless I have to ( there are simplywaytoo many ) . But for work - related photos , I run to do some fast edits before I upload them .
Unless I need something specific that I ca n’t do in the Photos app , I pretty much just make those quick edits with the native editing tools in Photos . But sometimes , I will notice things after the fact , like a speck of dust on the back of a phone or a spot that did n’t get wiped away beforehand . Hey , it find !
But with the Apple Photos app , I do n’t have a way to get disembarrass of those unwanted objects in images or a style to make clean up a exposure before sharing it . I ’d have to rely on a third - company app or , starting on May 15 , utilize the Google Photos app for those edits .
It ’s just a footling sticky that we do n’t have a tool like Magic Eraser in the Apple Photos app . Right now , you may adapt the astuteness and lighting for portrait , make canonical pic adjustments , add filter , and utilise cropping tools . In other words , just the fundamental principle .
Though many people may think of Google ’s Magic Eraser first , even Samsung has its own version of the tool on Galaxy devices in 2021 , fitly refer Object Eraser . And with the launch ofGalaxy AIthis year , that feature of speech became better than ever . Though we have n’t yet done a side - by - side comparison of the two , both are pretty decent at getting rid of those unwanted object and tidying up exposure . Both Google and Samsung also have their own interpretation of productive AI editing too , for those even fancier edits .
Could iOS 18 be the answer?
There has been a lot of talking aboutApple researching and endow in procreative AI , and maybe evenpartnering with Google on Geminior using ChatGPT for a next version of iOS .
With Apple ’s WWDC 2024 just around the corner , and rumors suggest thatiOS 18will be the “ biggest update yet , ” there ’s a high fortune that we will seesome form of AIin the next software package update for iPhones . After all , with almost every other competitor implementing nomadic AI in some form these Clarence Day , it would be foolish for Apple to not get on display panel .
Of course , even if Apple were enforce some kind of AI into iOS 18 , it might start small with thing like instinctive linguistic process conversation for writing , summarization , good mechanization with Shortcuts , and perhaps Siri improvements . I would love to see productive AI photo - redaction puppet , but I would n’t be surprised if that does n’t make it into Io this year .
no matter , Apple ’s Photos app is clearly lacking in putz compared to the competition . I hope Apple has plans to make the Photos app better soon , because I ’d rather not have to use multiple apps for photograph editing if I can avoid it . It ’s cumbersome , uneasy , and just looks bad for Apple . It ’s high time to fix this .
