We are drowning inearly Apple Vision Pro takes . Many from those who have actually used it . Probably more from those who have not yet done so . I will now add to that latter heap .
I have no doubt thatApple Vision Prois a remarkable Cartesian product . It would not surprise me in the slightest if we all see back 10 years from now and say , “ Yep , Apple did n’t do it first . But it did it best , and look at how far it ’s make for that category . ”

And there ’s been plenty of randomness about whether Apple Vision Pro can replace your living way television . I think that ’s the haywire interrogation . It ’s the amiss direction to think about it . It ’s not ( yet ) anywhere nigh to supercede the telly like the iPhone ( and Android phones , to be bonny ) supersede the onetime - fashioned landline .
At least , I do n’t think it will ever do that for anyone who does n’t live alone .
man — not all , but most — are societal creatures . We crave association . In fact , we try the tech execs say that all the time . It ’s all about connecting citizenry . Apple does it with computer hardware . Facebook does it as a political program . ( Whether it does so for ill or honorable remain very much up for argument . ) And that ’s not to say that Apple Vision Pro wo n’t connect people . It will , and in very much the same room that youriPhone have you connectwith someone who ’s not there . Yes , even on your TV .
But in a family unit of more than one person , there ’s nothing quite like curling up on the sofa with a good ( or bad ! ) movie . Or a 30 - minute of arc or hour - long show . There ’s nothing like live a parachuting panic is coming and glancing over to see the chemical reaction from your partner or kid . There ’s a reason why we get together for major sporting events . Or to stream Taylor Swift ’s concert . These are communal events by nature .
Apple Vision Pro will never supervene upon the experience of a family in the same room .
They do n’t have to be , of line . you may watch out whatever you want , however you want , with whomever you require . No one ’s going to force you to do it with someone .
But Apple Vision Pro take away that contiguous sense of family . Somewhere , there likely is a Gary Larrson - character funny ( or mayhap a Simpsons opening credit gag ? ) or a family all watching headset , catch the same thing . Together , but utterly alone . Dystopian to the max .
Sure , Apple Vision Pro let you make FaceTime call . ( That whole theatrical role thing is absolutely very creepy-crawly but alsolikely will amend . ) That ’s togetherness , in a mother wit . But it ’s also the incarnation of one somebody in a headset talking to someone else — very perchance to their own avatar representing their possessor in their own headset . It ’s communication , certain . But it ’s not communal . Not in the same way it ’d be if you countersink up your iPhone as a Continuity Camera for aFaceTime call over Apple TV , with everyone grouped in front of it .
I ’ll even go so far as to say that none of that is even a smash against Apple Vision Pro . possibly it ’s not going to replace televisions because it ’s not really hypothecate to . It ’s something dissimilar . Better in some instances , perhaps . Worse in others .
It does n’t have to solve all the world ’s problem . And in the causa of what it means to sit together and drink down an 60 minutes or two in front of the idiot box — it just ca n’t .
