I had learned about the singular shooter a few months after it launch and was straight off draw in by its graphic new art stylus and middle - catching name . I ’d buy it on a raging vacation weekend in July . It was the perfect time to go alfresco and get some air , but I could n’t unglue myself from my computer . I chew it up in a few sittings , haunt over its sci - fi setting , roguelite organization , and glib shooting .
All of that fall back to me when I demoedWild Bastardsat this year’sGame Developers Conference . The rubric is n’t exactly a sequel toVoid Bastards , but more of a ghostlike follow - up . It ’s another brightly coloredfirst - person shooterwith procedural constituent and a light board plot twist . However , the new game is n’t just reduplicate the same magic doubly . It ’s a saucy riff onVoid Bastards ’ riffing formula fill with Western style , feuding mate , and bean - trading .

My outlaws work interpersonal relationships with one another as the run progresses . Sometimes , two will acquire closer . Other time , they ’ll hate one another , so I ca n’t bring them out on a charge together . The only direction I can resolve that is by using beans , a resource that can be found on planets , which are trade to squelch the beef between crewmates . Wild Bastardsdisincentives players from simply wreak the same gang members on every mission , too . An outlaw with a full energy Browning automatic rifle will get buffs when taken out on a mission .
That overlaying accent on bunch management adds a new layer to a familiar rule . When I finally bring on a planet , I ’m thrown into another board plot setup where I have to move my crowd towards loot to collect it and successfully extract it by finding an exit degree on the map . To do that , though , I need to take out rival crook that block cardinal paths to treasure . When I land on those enemy spaces , I ’m dropped into first - individual armed combat encounter in small arenas where my crew selection come into play .
Each outlaw fundamentally represent as a different gun loadout that I can switch between with a mouse rack turn . In one level , I ’d bring along a character with a long - image sniper rifle , who I had equipped with a jetpack . That would allow me to vaporize high into the melodic line to discover enemies and pick them off from afar . I paired that with a close - compass role who shot flame lob shots , which was a consummate playstyle compliment . The few arena battles I flirt through were very short , offering bite - sized ball of tight - paced shooting that is n’t so far off fromVoid Bastards ’ stylish combat .
