When I sit down down to demoWorld of Goo 2at this year ’s GDC , I take down to the developer on bridge player how surprising it was to see a sequel after so long . “ It ’s been , what ? Ten years ? ” I said . I was very far off the mark : They take down that the originalWorld of Goolaunched in 2008 . After playing a few grade ( and have an experiential crisis over time ’s rapid passing ) , I ’d find myself wondering how such an obvious slam stuff shot did n’t come rather .
Like its predecessor , World of Goo 2is a physical science - based puzzle game where thespian craft structures from little , gooey critters . It portray a series of engineering challenges , as badly ramp up complex body part will topple under the weight of all those jiggly short pals . Rather than reinventing that conception entirely , World of Goo 2adds some uncivilised raw idea onto that unchanging complex body part that open up its teaser electric potential . The result is achaotic co - op gamethat ’s a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch .

During my demonstration , I ’d play a handful of horizontal surface in a two - player co - op . The ascendence scheme was childlike : I ’d show my Joy - Con at the TV and use apparent motion controls to pick up and come out goo ball . The first stage retreaded the staple of the original game , as my partner and I built a rickety tower of slime until it contact an overhanging organ pipe . We ’d rapidly get to see that try - and - dead on target construct develop when the continuation ’s new twist came into play : black sludge .
In one level , we ’d necessitate to loose a undulation of liquid state from a hanging net so it could hang down a whirl snarl and wake up some goo balls at the bottom . Next we ’d ask to create a bridge - like structure to let us pack the liquid across a all-encompassing gap . A later puzzle would turn the complexness up even more . My collaborator and I would want to funnel that muck into a plant that would spit it out in a long arc . We ’d then have to grab the plant and redirect its aim in fiat to solve a tricky puzzle in which we used the force of the stream to lodge a boulder into a gap and produce a safe chopine for some goo balls to cut across over .
The developer from 2D Boy , who were on hand during the demonstration , note that the physics system was what gave them the self-confidence to make a new continuation . It ’s a trick that they felt they could n’t pull off until this instant using the Switch ’s updated hardware . That thought run to some other fun puzzle twists , too . A novel white goo orchis can soak up pools of sludge , put in it in the junctions between ball . One standout teaser would have my partner and I create an intricate structure that was big enough to nurse all the goo out of a fissure , unearthing a submerge piping beneath it .
There were ton of cagey twists to be found in the few levels I played , but it ’s the Colorado - op play that really link up them together . By the end of our session , my partner and I found a working rhythm as we talked through morphologic provision and took turns adding new gook balls to our body structure . It ’s the form of multiplayer secret plan double-dyed for those who want to puzzle out together , talking through answer and express joy when the execution goes to the south . And with eight - histrion co - op livelihood , I imagine it ’ll make for one heck of a chaotic company secret plan .
Though I ’ve only seen a small taste of whatWorld of Goo 2has to offer , I ’m already grateful that 2D Boy finally gave its infant the continuation treatment so many years after . The puzzle rule is still as fun as ever , and there are enough newfangled ideas here that it feel like a genuine subsequence as fight down to some redundant DLC levels arrive 16 days latterly . With the Nintendo Switch ’s lifespanpotentially begin to wind down , it could be one of the system ’s last must - own carbon monoxide - op plot .
World of Goo 2launches for Nintendo Switch and PC on May 23 .
